COMPANY DESCRIPTION

UBT

UBT SRL (Umbria Bioengineering Technologies) was founded in 2015 as an innovative startup and academic spin-off of the Department of Physics and Geology (FISGEO) of the University of Perugia, Italy. UBT (benefit company) is a biomedical company which develops and commercialises a portfolio of innovative medical imaging devices based on cutting-edge microwaves technology instead of dangereous ionizing radiation (X-Rays). UBT has so far developed the following patented products:

– MammoWave (TRL 9): is a novel mammogram for breast lesions detection.

– BrainWave (TRL 6): is a novel device for brain stroke detection and classification.

– LungWave (TRL 4): s a novel device for lung lesions detection and monitoring.

Since 2017, UBT has been collaborating with London South Bank University, UK, where it has an operational headquarters and has sponsored studentships (PhD and Post PhD).

Gianluigi Tiberi

Inventor and co-founder, Head of R&D

Graduated in Telecommunications Engineering from the University of Pisa with a Master at King’s College (UK), Ph.D. degree in Information Engineering from the University of Pisa, Post Ph.D. at University of Oxford through a Marie Curie Intra European Fellowships for Career Development, Seventh Research Framework Programme. Gianluigi matured a solid experience in the applied electromagnetics and microwave imaging for medical application (he is also the coordinator the Radio Frequency laboratory of Imago7 Foundation, Pisa). He authored more than 80 journal and conference papers and he is co-lecturer of Electromagnetics for Medical Applications at Biomedical Engineering, University of Pisa He is the scientist who studied the theory of MammoWave technology disseminated via numerous international conferences and scientific papers. He is the inventor of the patented microwave apparatus (Apparatus for testing the integrity of mammary tissues) and founder of UBT-Umbria bioengineering technologies.

Giovanni Raspa

Inventor and co-founder, CTO

Giovanni Raspa is an expert in mechatronics and is the owner of 3 patents, one of which is the microwave apparatus for testing the integrity of mammary tissues and the other two cover an automatic machine for the reading stamping and a tearing of postal current account receipts. These technologies are currently widely utilized in the postal industry and in the textile industry. He has managerial experience as was cofounder and technical director of Radio Subasio, a Radio in Italy.

Navid Ghavami

Co-founder, imaging and algorithm development

Navid Ghavami received the B. Eng degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from King’s College and a Ph.D. degree from the University of Oxford. During his PhD and post-doc years, he worked on developing microwave imaging methods with potential applications on cancer detection. Together with Gianluigi Tiberi, he studied the theory of MammoWave technology disseminated via numerous international conferences and scientific papers. Winner of several prizes, he was research associate at King’s College, London. He now joined UBT UK division as senior researcher in imaging and algorithm development

Mario Badia

Data analyst and software expert

Mario Badia got the Bachelor Degree in Telecommunications and Electronics Engineering at Universidad de Oriente, Cuba, in 2016, with focus on software engineering, machine learning, digital signal processing and computer networks. Next, he matured a solid experiences as telecommunication engineer (ETECSA, Cuba) and as Software Developer (MICRA SOFTWARE E SERVICES Srl, Italy). In 2091, he joined UBT Srl, working in the development of radio-frequencies integrated solutions for biomedical applications, signal processing, data analysis using machine learning algorithms. His software skill includes: Python, Machine Learning, Web develop, C#, JAVA, MATLAB, Flutter.

Alessandra Bigotti

Graduated in Physics at the Department of Physics and Geology (FISGEO) of the University of Perugia, she did her final project at the Hospital of S.Maria della Misericordia, Perugia, working on the analysis and processing of radiological and MR images. In November 2017 Alessandra joined the scientific team of UBT, managing clinical trial and regulatory.

He obtained his Bachelor Degree in Biomedical Engineering at Carlos III University of Madrid (UC3M), with an intensification on design of medical devices. His research activity covered neuromuscular simulation and electrophysiological analyses, carried out during his internship in National Hospital of Paraplegics of Toledo. In June 2019 Daniel joined the scientific team of UBT, to perform clinical tests in Spain and collaborate in MammoWave development.

Dr. Rana is a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow (fellowship co-sponsored by UBT Srl) at London South Bank University (LSBU), London, UK, working in field of Artificial Intelligence applied to microwave imaging data for breasts lesion Lesions detection and classification. Dr. Rana has completed his PhD at LSBU. He received his Bachelor of Engineering (2009) from The University of Burdwan, India and Master of Technology Degree (2012) from West Bengal University of Technology, India. His research interest includes physiological activity identification from UWB technology, machine learning, deep learning, image retrieval, signal processing, occupancy monitoring, health and imaging aspects for medical applications.

Lorenzo Papini

Data analyst and AI

Graduated in Physics at the Department of Physics and Geology of the University of Perugia in 2017, he received a Ph.D. in Physics from University of Padova in 2020. During his Ph.D. , Dr. Papini worked on modelization of black hole solutions in the context of String Theory, specializing in solving (numerically and analytically) non-linear differential equations and in analyzing the various black hole parameters by using various data analysis techniques. From July 2021, Lorenzo started working with UBT team, focussing on data analysis and development of machine learning algorithms to be applied to the collected data.

Graduated in Physics at the Department of Physics of the University of Tehran, she got a Master of Science (MSC) degree with first class in Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, and a Ph.D. at London South Bank University, London (UK). Her research area is in the optimization of the microwave apparatus for breast cancer detection and its extension to other diagnostic applications, such as bone lesions detection and lung imaging.

Renier Perez

Renier Perez obtained a Computer Science Engineering degree from the University of Informatics Sciences, Havana, Cuba, in 2012, with an emphasis on Software Engineering and Artificial Intelligence. He has then acted as Senior Specialist in Computer Science (XETID, Cuba), Software Quality Control Engineer and DevOps Engineer (OptimalBit LLC, Belarus, Remote) and Backend Developer (Soldev, France, Remote).

He now joined UBT and, currently, he is studying towards a Master's degree in Artificial Intelligence at the University of Calabria, Italy. His software skills include: Python, Machine Learning, Web develop, C#, PHP, Angular, Flutter, Data Analysis.

Moein Movafagh

Microwave Imaging

Moein Movafagh received MSc in Electrical engineering from KNTU, Iran, and is currently studying for a Ph.D. at London South Bank University, UK, focussed on microwave imaging and artificial intelligence for stroke and breast applications. During his MSc, he worked on FMCW radar imaging and improving the SNR of the image created by the synthetic aperture radar (SAR) method. Besides, he worked on the automotive radar with a focus on mitigating interference with collaboration with Infineon; he published papers and filed a patent.

Subhra Prakash Rana received Bachelor of Technology (B.TECH) in Civil Engineering from BPUT UNIVERSITY ODHISHA, INDIA, and Master of Design (M.DES) in Industrial Design from VIT UNIVERSITY, VELLORE, INDIA (2021). He has expertise in problem solving and Computer Aided Design (CAD) to create high-quality drafting experience with Bill of Materials (BOM) in SOLIDWORKS. He is proficient in using Key-Shot for 3D renderings and in developing FDM 3D printers from scratch for rapid prototyping.

He joined UBT SRL acting as Intern Product Designer.

Bilal Khalid

Bilal Khalid received a bachelor’s (BET) degree in Electrical and Telecommunications Engineering from the COMSATS University of Information and Technology, Islamabad, Pakistan, and an M.Sc. degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from London South Bank University, in 2019 with the distinction award. In 2024, he received the Ph.D. from LSBU. He has experience in the development of microwave imaging hardware and algorithms for medical applications and in phantoms design and characterization.

Since September 2024, he is a Post Doc at LSBU.

Gianmarco Palomba

Gianmarco Palomba got the Bachelor Degree in Biomedical Engineering at University of Naples “Federico II”, Italy, in 2017. He concluded his study at University of Padua, Italy where he graduated in Bioengineering, in 2021, choosing a transversal study path in different biomedical sectors such as: processing and analysis of biomedical data, clinical engineering, mechanics of materials and neurosciences. His first professional experince was in Rome, with LB Servizi per le Aziende Srl. Here, he worked as laboratory engineer-technician for the dosimetric analysis department. In early 2023, Gianmarco joined the UBT research team holding the data analyst role to perform quality control and performance assessment.

A. Grassini, matured a relevant experience in several prestigious universities from London School of Economics, to MPA Harvard-Cambridge, LUISS. He worked as CEO of international companies such as FIAT – Brasile, Legler Spa, Teleco, ICLE. He has been Full Professor of Industrial Technology at University of Perugia, University of Ancona, Luiss University and Boston College.

Groups), General Manager at Calzaturificio Umbro (Gruppo IGI / Primigi) gaining a solid managerial expertise in business administration and marketing. Since 2015, he is CEO at UBT and is fully committed to manage the business development of MammoWave.

Graduated in Biology at the University of Pisa, Italy, with experimental thesis/clinical research at CNR-Pisa Genetics Department, Stefano started his career path in the Italian healthcare market where he obtained a vast level of professional growth through the management of complex businesses. He has a deep understanding of both the pharmaceutical market (15 years with Pfizer, Italy, where he covered various managerial roles) and the medical device market (6 Years in Philips Healthcare Italy, where he covered the role of Country Manager).

Stefano is now the UBT Director of Commercial Operations in Italy; he is creating the commercial structure in charge of developing the Italian market through a direct sales approach.

Mary Terry

Graduated in American Foreign Policy at the University of Wisconsin, Mary has a vast experience in pharmaceutical marketing in the US and within the Italian and European healthcare markets. She started her career with Pfizer urology hospital products in the US then transferred to Pfizer Italy where she was a marketing manager. Mary has also been active in KOL development through CME courses aimed at facilitating their international publications process and public speaking along with facilitating patient advocacy partnerships for numerous companies.

She is responsible for coordinating the sales and marketing functions inside UBT.

Michele Duranti

Dr Michele Duranti, MD, specialized in Radiodiagnostics and Imaging Science at University of Perugia (1993) and currently director at Radiology department at the Hospital of S.Maria della Misericordia (Perugia Hospital), is the Principal Investigator of the feasibility clinical trials conducted by UBT. In this context, he leads in Perugia a team of four physicians himself; Dr Andrea Saracini; Dr Eleonora Vannini; Dr Simonetta Ercolani) actively involved in the ongoing clinical trials, and they are also contributing with their unique insights to UBT business and scientific project. He is also coordinating the activity of Dr. Riccardo Loretoni, which is performing MammoWave clinical trials at Foligno Hospital, Italy.

Full professor in Enterprise funding at the Department of Economics of University of Perugia. He is delegate of the University’s rector for the Technology Transfer activity. He has ten years of experience in innovation and incubation of start-ups and spin-off companies coming from breakthrough research. He is member of the directors board of PNICube, Association of the Incubators and of the Italian Academic Business Plan Competitions, of which he was previously President and Vice-President. Thanks to the various projects awarded within the EU, three clinical studies (one of which is still ongoing) related to MammoWave clinical validation have been activated at the Hospital Universitario de Toledo (Spain). The Hospital Universitario de Toledo is also a partner of the MammoScreen project.

Ospedale Policlinico San Martino

Thanks to the various projects awarded within the EU, three clinical studies (one of which is still ongoing) related to MammoWave clinical validation have been activated at the Ospedale Policlinico San Martino, Genova (Italy). Specifically, the Ospedale Policlinico San Martino is acting as coordinator centre for Italy within the clinical study activated in the context of MammoScreen project.

London South Bank University (LSBU)

UBT Srl activated Industry Part Funded PhD and Matched Funded Post-PhD with the Centre for Bioengineering (former BiMEC), at London South Bank University (LSBU), UK, focused on the optimization of the microwave apparatus for breast cancer detection and its extension to other diagnostic applications, and on Artificial Intelligence-AI.

This partnership concerns the risk assessment for electromagnetic fields radiated by medical devices such as electrosurgical-knifeand magneto-therapy apparatus. In addition, MammoWave clinical trials have been activated at Foligno Hospital.

ARPA Umbria

This partnership concerns the definition of dedicated protocols for the measurements of electromagnetic fields, in working environments and hospital environments.

Azienda Ospedaliera di Perugia

The first MammoWave clinical trials have been activated at Perugia Hospital “Azienda Ospedaliera S. Maria della Misericordia”. Feasibility clinical trials successfully ended in 2020.
